Showing off a successful methane production from yeast

In Plant and Animal Science, students have been learning about the digestion process in animals in a hands on way! Last week they demonstrated the functions of monogastric digestion with a few household items such as soda, bread, and some nylon hose. Some say it was gross and disturbing, but definitely not forgettable (also very messy).

To show how ruminant animals produce methane gas while they digest food, students also got to perform an experiment to witness gas production when bacteria in the form of yeast consumes table sugar. The goal was to fill the balloon with methane gas!
