We have been working our way through the number sense standards using hands-on manipulatives and real life situations to understand how positive and negative numbers relate to each other.
We started with a vertical number line to visualize story problems and find distances. Then we worked with both horizontal and vertical number lines to solve integer addition and subtraction problems.
We also used integer chips (yellow + and red -) as a visual to see zero pairs. Students had a choice of two types of number lines or integer chips to use as a resource when mentally solving integer problems.
